'You wouldn't spot this...' - Big VAR claim emerges live on TV after Everton incident

Dermot Gallagher has revealed live on Sky Sports why VAR sent Allan off in Everton’s win last night.

Everton and their fans will have felt hard done by last night when Allan, who was originally handed a yellow card for hacking down Allan Saint-Maximin, then saw it upgraded to a red card after VAR intervened.

While the decision will have split opinions amongst fans given he was off the ground when he made contact with the Newcastle player but seemed to be very minimal contact at all, it appears to have been the correct decision according to the letter of the law.

The former Premier League referee has revealed what VAR would’ve been thinking when coming to the decision last night.

“We’ve got to accept there’s a new layer of scrutiny and that layer of scrutiny is look at each every tackle like that and what they’ve done. When you look at that tackle as the VAR shows it, you see the image of Allan with both feet off the ground and flying through the air because it’s freeze-framed at that point.

“The other thing they focus on now is the point of contact, and again you wouldn’t spot this on the field but the point of contact they say is just above the ankle and they’ve made this conscious decision that this season is a challenge with the point of contact with studs above the ankle is going to be sanctioned with a red card.”

TIF Thoughts on Allan’s red card…

It has been reported that Everton will launch an appeal to the FA over Allan’s red card, with the Toffees clearly feeling that the Brazilian should not have been sent off, despite the freeze-frame of him leaving the ground not looking pleasant.

Lampard will be hoping that Everton win their appeal as Allan has been someone that’s featured quite regularly under both himself
