‘You’re all corrupt!’ – Denis Shapovalov’s furious Rafael Nadal rant to umpire in Australian Open defeat

Denis Shapovalov lost his cool during his Australian Open quarter-final defeat to Rafael Nadal, sensationally accusing the chair umpire of corruption.

The Spaniard came through an epic five-set match to win 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-3 in a fiery encounter at Melbourne Park to reach a 36th Grand Slam semi-final.

One moment in particular had everyone talking though as Shapovalov was left furious with the amount of time Nadal was taking on his serve.

At the start of the second set, Shapovalov was fed up with his opponent getting perceived special treatment, stating to chair umpire Carlos Bernardes: ‘You’re looking at the clock so long ago and he’s still not ready to play.

‘You’ve gotta code him.’

Bernardes wasn’t having any of it though and responded: ‘He’s (Nadal) not ready to play.’

As the Canadian’s gripe fell on deaf ears he headed back to the baseline, shouting: ‘Are you kidding me? You are all corrupt!’

Nadal attempted to diffuse the situation and received praise from former Aussie tennis star Todd Woodbridge on how he handled the incident.

‘Rafa walked up with authority as if to say, “Now son, come here” and put his hand out gently as to say, “We don’t have issues. You just get back there and play and we’ll get it all done,”‘ he said in commentary.
