Yorkshire Tea shares specific time you need to wait after pouring in hot water

Everyone makes tea a little bit differently.

While some of us put the milk in first, others are adamant that hot water should be added to our mugs straight after the tea bag. That's not the only squabble Brits have either.

While some prefer their cuppas to be seriously strong, others like to taste mostly milk with a dash of tea flavour. And let's not even get started on the sugar or no sugar debate.

To put some of the arguments to rest, Yorkshire Tea have outlined the three steps you should take next time you stick the kettle on. The tea experts even shed light on common mistakes people make when making their brews – so be sure to follow the advice carefully...

When boiling the kettle, the tea makers say to "treat your water kindly". Their website adds: "Run the tap a little so the water’s nicely aerated, and only boil it once to keep the oxygen level up. Oxygen in water helps flavour!"

Next, it's time to "pop a tea bag into your mug, pour the hot water and stir briefly". As many of us get impatient and immediately want to feel the hot drinks running down our throats, we don't wait enough time for everything to brew.

The Yorkshire Tea website tells people to "wait patiently" for a specific amount of time. They add: "Tea needs time to unlock all its flavour, so give it 4-5 minutes to do its thing."

If you're struggling to be patient, fear not. The experts add: "This is a perfect time to munch a sneaky biscuit or daydream about holidays."

Finally, it's time to take the bag out carefully. Resist the urge to squeeze the bag with the back of your spoon and be a lot more gentle.
