Yobs throw a LOG in front an oncoming train - starting a fire and bringing down power lines

Vandals who launched a log into the path of an oncoming train caused hours of disruption on the rail line between Manchester and Bolton.

Police are now hunting the culprits who furious transport bosses risked the lives of passengers and staff. The 'dangerous and reckless' attack happened near Bolton just after 6:30pm last night (Monday).

A 'group of individuals' threw the piece of wood at a Northern train traveling from Blackpool North to Hazel Grove with more than 100 passengers on-board.

It smashed a window and caused a brief fire on the train after it was struck just on the Manchester side of the Farnworth Tunnel, Network Rail said.

Thankfully no one was hurt and all passengers were evacuated before the train was moved from the scene. However as well as the train, damage was also caused to nearly 300 metres of overhead power cable and the structures and equipment which hold the 25,000 volt cables up. More than 30 trains were delayed last night.

Engineers worked through the night to repair the cables however there was further disruption this morning before the line eventually re-opened just after 10am.

There were knock-on delays on other forms of public transport including buses which were much busier than normal this morning.

'Knock-on' delays are expected for the rest of the day and Network Rail are advising anyone traveling between Manchester and Bolton to check the latest information online before setting out.

British Transport Police (BTP) are now investigating and rail bosses say they are working with the force to help catch the culprits.
