Years apart before a Christmas reunion in arrivals... Love Actually at Manchester Airport

“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that.

“It seems to me that love is everywhere.”

These few lines from the opening scene of Love Actually have made arrivals at airports across the world feel like part of a movie set. But on Christmas Eve at Manchester Airport, there’s no acting involved.

Flowers, balloons, gifts have all lined the railings at Terminal 2 arrivals. Flights from Doha, Jeddah, Amsterdam, have all landed.

Sleepy passengers who boarded in sunnier climes have trudged off planes in rainy Mancunian weather, grabbed their luggage, and found their way through immigration. They’ve met their loved ones and set off for the final leg of their journey home for Christmas Day.

But it’s now two hours since husband and wife Cameron and Guney Nisbett, both 32, arrived at the airport. It’s been an hour since the flight from Istanbul they are waiting for landed. They are the only two, along with Cameron’s mum and dad, left waiting in the arrivals hall.

Guney has been tap dancing on the spot for the best part of 40 minutes, expecting her beloved dad to walk through the double doors. This father and daughter have the same sense of humour as so many reuniting this Christmas, he hasn’t even arrived yet and she’s already giving him an adorably rough time, holding up a sign in Turkish calling him by his nickname and jokingly adding ‘are you ready? You’re England’s problem now!’
