Brendan Rodgers reckons Yang’s thrilling Champions League cameo against Bayern Munich could be the making of the winger.

The Hoops wide man made a big impact from the bench in the late surge that has given Celts a chance heading into Tuesday’s play-off second leg in Germany. Yang has been a bit-part player at times and is behind Nicolas Kuhn, Daizen Maeda, Jota and James Forrest in the pecking order. The Korean kid was tipped for a loan exit but has shown flashes to suggest he can have a future at Parkhead.

And Rodgers is hoping his big time performance against Bayern can be a major confidence boost. He said: “Yang has done really well. He is looking strong, he is improving and he came on and gave us that energy. The Champions League is an arena where you need your squad. The level of physicality required is so big that you need those players who can come on and impact the game for you and I think he did that really well.

“To improve as a player, training and playing and working with better players will help you. What Nicolas and Daizen have shown is what we want from wingers, that if you get into the right positions you can score goals.

“Yang is obviously still a young player who is adapting to the culture and everything about the game here and the size of the club. But he has made a valuable contribution for us this season. There are ones ahead of him, but when he has been asked to play he has done well.

“He wants to improve his numbers and you can see in the last few games he is starting to affect games more. But he is a good guy who has developed really well. It is just timing really. It is what he needs. Because of the intensity with which we play, we need to have four or five wingers around for all the games that
