Xander Schauffele wins The Open as American produces magical final day burst to clinch second major

Xander Schauffele produced a magical final-day burst to become Open champion.

The American star tormented his rivals and Royal Troon as he bagged his second Major of the year. Schauffele began the day a shot behind leader Billy Horschel in a pack of six players. But the 30-year-old’s scintillating burst took him clear and secured the Claret Jug. Schauffele blasted a blistering 65 in the last round to break the heart of English hero Justin Rose.

The European Ryder Cup hero played alongside the victor and pushed him all the way as he impressed with his own round of 67. But Schauffele just had too much as he backed up his win at the USPGA Championship at Valhalla in May with the massive prize in Ayrshire.

The Californian, who won the Genesis Scottish Open in 2022 and also has an Olympic Gold Medal, finished two clear of Rose with a winning total of 275, nine-under par. Overnight leader Horschel was unable to stay the distance and was eclipsed by his countryman. Scotland’s Calum Scott was the Silver Medal winner as the Nairn kid finished as low amateur for the week at Royal Troon.
