WSL: Stunning Kaneryd volley helps Chelsea past Spurs

Chelsea's Johanna Rytting Kaneryd scored a stunning flying volley as Sonia Bompastor’s side maintained their perfect start to the Women’s Super League season with a 5-2 win over Tottenham.

The champions were given a scare by Spurs when goalkeeper Hannah Hampton dropped Amanda Nilden’s cross over the line to cancel out Maika Hamano’s early goal, but thereafter Chelsea took control.

First Nilden headed into her own net on the stroke of half-time before Kaneryd scored twice either side of Sandy Baltimore’s second goal for the club. Eveliina Summanen scored a fine free-kick for Tottenham but it was mere consolation.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Manchester City maintained their lead at the top of the table with a 2-1 comeback victory at home to Aston Villa.

Gabi Nunes gave the visitors the lead on 20 minutes before second half goals from Lauren Hemp and Jill Roord gave the hosts their fourth consecutive WSL victory.

Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe played all 90 minutes as Arsenal won 2-0 away at West Ham, the Gunners' first outing since Jonas Eidevall's resignation as manager.

Mariona Caldentey opened the scoring from the spot on 71 minutes before substitute Rosa Kafaji added a second just before added time.

Ireland's Leanne Kiernan and Abbie Larkin both came off the bench as the former's Liverpool side were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace.

Katie Stengel, who previously played for the Reds, opened the scoring for the Eagles on 14 minutes, before Cornelia Kapocs hit back ahead of the half-time break.

Niamh Fahey and Izzy Atkinson remained on the bench for Liverpool and Palace respectively.

An early Yuka Momiki gave Leicester City a 1-0 win at home to Everton, who had Ireland goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan between the sticks.
