Wrexham manager makes admission ahead of Manchester United pre-season fixture

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has admitted that although the Manchester United pre-season clash is exciting, he is fully focused on their next match against Oldham Athletic.

On Tuesday, it was announced by both United and Wrexham that the two teams would face each other in a pre-season encounter in San Diego on July 25. The Reds are expected to field a youthful side to take on Parkinson's men who are hoping to be in League Two by the time the clubs meet.

The Red Dragons suffered a minor setback in midweek as they aim to reach the Football League as Notts County beat Altrincham 2-0 to move back to the top of the National League, having played two games more. As such, when posed the question about the upcoming clash with United, Parkinson admitted that his focus was on Oldham this Saturday.

Speaking to the Evening Leader, Parkinson said: "The pre-season trip is an exciting one and when the time comes, it will be great for the club. But, our focus is on this week's training and the Oldham game at the weekend.

"Saturday's win against York was good for us in terms of another win on the way to where we need to get to but no more than that. We are pleased and the owners coming over always adds to the occasion and the atmosphere.

"But concentration levels are now firmly on what we need to do this week." Last week, Wrexham announced the arrival of former United goalkeeper Ben Foster on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Foster retired at the end of the 2021/22 campaign following relegation from the Premier League with Watford. However, he has since signed for the Red Dragons after their first choice 'keeper Rob Lainton suffered an injury.
