Wrexham friendly provides three players perfect opportunity to stake Manchester United claim

Manchester United will meet Wrexham for a pre-season friendly this summer in an ideal opportunity for several of the club's youngsters to prove themselves to manager Erik ten Hag.

United will use a young squad for the contest, with further senior fixtures to be announced as part of the tour. The Wrexham game takes place in San Diego on July 25 and football director John Murtough has already confirmed a youthful approach to the game.

Murtough said: "This is a chance for not only Erik but also our US supporters to assess the homegrown talent that is developing within our academy, and hopefully to be able to say, 'I saw him here first,' if some of those players go on to establish themselves as first team regulars."

Several players on the fringes of the first-team or out on loan in the Football League will be handed their opportunity and it's a chance to stake a first team claim.

For United's only current Welsh player in the first-team picture, featuring against Wrexham would no doubt be a special occasion. Especially as Savage's father, Robbie, was born in the city. Currently on loan in League One with Forest Green Rovers, the Wales under-21 international has made seven appearances, scoring once against Bristol Rovers. After featuring in Australia and Thailand last summer, plus in Spain during December, Savage will be keen to show Ten Hag his improvement after playing in the third tier for the remainder of this season.

For the England under-19 international, this summer will be the first pre-season with the senior side after a meteoric rise during Ten Hag's debut season in charge. Mainoo debuted in the Premier League against Leicester City
