Wrexham 1-0 Grimsby: Dragons' record signing scores debut goal as fans return to Racecourse

Wrexham AFC had their record signing to thank as they continued their promotion push with a win at the Racecourse.

Just under 8,500 fans were present to see a solitary goal from new man Ollie Palmer see off the challenge of promotion rivals Grimsby Town.

The win sees Wrexham stay in sixth position ahead of a testing run of fixtures and continues the Dragons fine recent run of form which has seen them win 9 out of their last 12 games.

The first half began with both sides struggling to gain a foothold on the game, Wrexham were happy to utilise the long ball whilst Grimsby were trying to play in their forwards but to no avail.

As the half wore on the Dragons started to get a bit more joy in the final third and after a couple of half chances went begging the large home support were sent into raprtures with a debut goal for record signing Ollie Palmer as the former AFC Wimbledon man slotted home.

Wrexham continued to press with makeshift left back Liam McAlinden putting in a particularly impressive display.

The half time whistle blew and Wrexham deserved to go into the interval with a narrow lead.

At the start of the second half Wrexham looked to put the game to bed and Paul Mullin was unlucky to see his shot from an acute angle saved by Mariners keeper Max Crocombe.

Max Cleworth also came close, but his header went just wide from an excellent Jordan Davies delivery.

The game was becoming slightly stretched at this point with Grimsby continuing to pose a threat but without ever really creating any clear cut chances, however there were a few nervy moments for the home fans as the away side looked to nick a point.
