WrestleMania: US Title match 'still scheduled' to be part of the show
The United States Championship will still be defended at WrestleMania weekend, according to new reports.
Finn Balor became the new United States Champion on the 28th of February edition of Monday Night Raw, ending Damian Priest’s record-breaking run with the title. In the aftermath of the bout, Priest turned on Balor and the pair have continued their story over the past few weeks on WWE TV and faced each other at WWE live events.
Many fans expected to see a blow-off between the pair added to the WrestleMania card, however a match has yet to be announced. With rumours of WWE possibly waiting to add Seth Rollins to the mix if his proposed match with Cody Rhodes couldn’t be arranged in time.
The doubts over a match seem to be confirmed when WWE announced the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal for WrestleMania SmackDown this Friday, which featured both Finn Balor and Damian Priest in the graphic advertising the bout.
However, Dave Meltzer has reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that a United States clash between Balor and Priest “was scheduled’ for WrestleMania weekend. Noting that Priest’s recent win over the Irishman would see them settle their differences for the title in Dallas this weekend.
At WrestleMania 36, Priest teamed with Bad Bunny to defeat the team of The Miz and John Morrison, while Balor defended is NXT Title in a losing effort to Karrion Kross at last year’s NXT Stand and Deliver show.
The US Title was waded between Sheamus and Riddle in Tampa, with the Celtic Warrior defeating the current Raw Tag Team Champion to win the US strap for a third time.
