Wreath laid in Sir Bobby Charlton's Old Trafford seat as Manchester United players and fans mark emotional night with minute's silence

Manchester United players and fans fell silent in the culmination of an evening of remembrance for Sir Bobby Charlton. The Reds and England icon, considered by many to be the greatest-ever player to hail from this country, died on Saturday aged 86.

Tributes have since flooded in from the footballing world and beyond. And it was an emotional evening at Old Trafford as United prepared to take on FC Copenhagen in a crunch Champions League clash.

A survivor of the Munich Air Disaster who went on to win the European Cup. World Cup and Ballon d'Or, Sir Bobby was a constant presence in the club's director's box in the years after his playing days, and before the game, a wreath was laid in his seat by the club's CEO Richard Arnold.

The message on it read: "Loved, Adored, Never Forgotten. Thank you, the Manchester United family."

United's players and staff wore black arm bands, as they did against Sheffield United on Saturday. A lone piper accompanied United manager Erik Ten Hag, former teamate of Charlton's Alex Stepney and youth team captain Dan Gore out of the tunnel, playing the anthem 'We'll never die', as they laid a wreath in the centre circle before kick-off.

Both teams then stood for an impeccably observed minute's silence. FC Copenhagen fans held up a banner which read: 'Passion is what separates the good from the great. Rest in peace Sir Bobby Charlton' and also sang 'there's only one Bobby Charlton.'

A book of condolence which was opened on Sunday will again be available for fans to sign in
