Wout Weghorst sends emotional message to Manchester United more than a month after exit

Wout Weghorst has said his goodbyes to Manchester United more than a month after his loan spell ended.

The Dutchman returned to parent club Burnley at the end of June following a half-season spell at Old Trafford. He joined the Reds in January to fill the gap left by Cristiano Ronaldo but scored just two goals in 31 appearances across all competitions.

The 31-year-old was consistently available for manager Erik ten Hag at a time when his only other No.9, Anthony Martial, continued to struggle for fitness. He left the club with a Carabao Cup winner's medal, his first major honour.

Alongside a video compilation of his time with United, he said: "Dear Man United fans, thanks for everything. I really enjoyed every single second at this club, from winning silverware to scoring my first goal against Betis at Old Trafford.

"Dreams came true. Unbelievably proud to wear the badge. I wish you all the best for the future. Man United fans, thank you very much."

United made the decision not to sign Weghorst permanently at the start of May, with Ten Hag prioritising a world-class No.9 for the summer transfer window. He has since signed Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta in a £72million deal.

Having returned to Burnley at the start of summer, Weghorst was booed by sections of the Clarets fanbase when coming off the bench during a pre-season friendly against Belgian side Genk. His future at Turf Moor remains unclear.
