"Would be a great addition" - Keith Downie drops Newcastle & PIF verdict after big development

Dan Ashworth would be a ‘great addition’ to Newcastle United as he closes in on being appointed as the Magpies’ new director of football, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Tynesiders have been eager to fill the behind-the-scenes role for an extensive period, with them even hiring specialist recruitment firm Nolan Partners in December as they looked to find the right candidate for the job, and it appears Ashworth is set for St James’ Park.

Ashworth resigned from his role as Brighton & Hove Albion’s technical director last week, with the Seagulls suggesting the 50-year-old is looking to ‘take a similar role at another Premier League club’ after an extensive period of gardening leave.

He has since gone on to claim it was an ‘incredibly tough decision’ to quit the club but the big development means Ashworth is expected to be appointed as Newcastle’s new director of football.

Just 24 hours after his resignation, it emerged that Ashworth had already entered advanced talks with the Magpies over making the switch having already held initial discussions last month.

That came after Brighton gave their Premier League rivals permission to interview their then-technical director, but it is understood that the Seagulls are holding out for a substantial compensation package to allow Ashworth to cut short his notice period.

It appears Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe is looking forward to working with Ashworth after revealing he sees the impending arrival as a ‘very important appointment’.

Downie is certain that Ashworth is hoping for a compensation package to be agreed sooner rather than later as he wants to move into his new surroundings quickly.
