"Would be a disaster" - Journalist now drops big Leicester claim amid recent reports

If Leicester City lose attacking midfielder James Maddison at this stage of the summer, it would be ‘a disaster’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium in recent weeks following an outstanding 2021/22 campaign both domestically and in European competition.

A report from the Daily Mail back in April claimed that Leicester were considering cashing in on Maddison for £50 million in order to fund a revamp of Brendan Rodgers’ first-team squad.

However, the Foxes have made no efforts to offload their prized asset since then, and a formal offer is yet to be made for the one-cap England international.

But that could be set to charge over the coming weeks as Paul O’Keefe, an FA Registered Intermediary, has stated that Tottenham Hotspur are ‘very seriously considering’ making a move for Maddison.

The Evening Standard previously reported that Antonio Conte is set to turn his attention to bringing in a playmaker ahead of next season after already making significant additions in the current window.

Leicester are the only Premier League side yet to make a single signing this summer, while key midfielder Youri Tielemans is expected to depart the club.

And Jones believes losing Maddison, who has previously been labelled a “genius”, would be a bitter blow for the Midlands outfit, especially given his incredible performances of late.

He told GiveMeSport: “For Leicester to lose him right now would be a disaster. He was their Player of the Season last year; his goal output was really good.

“The other day, I saw Brendan Rodgers talking about James Maddison in terms of pre-season, and he said he’s looking the best he’s ever seen him.”
