Worthing 0 Maidstone United 2 match report: Ben Brookes scores twice from the spot as Stones book National League South play-off semi-final at Eastbourne Borough

Maidstone are through to the National League South play-off semi-finals after a terrific performance in their eliminator match at Worthing.

Left-back Ben Brookes scored twice from the penalty spot, while manager George Elokobi got his tactics spot on to stop the Rebels in their tracks.

United worked tirelessly to a man and richly deserved to set up a trip to Eastbourne Borough, whose boss Adam Murray was in the crowd, this Sunday.

Maidstone made a bright start at Woodside Road, giving the Rebels no time to settle into their passing game.

They closed the hosts down quickly, got in their faces and made life uncomfortable for Chris Agutter’s side.

The Rebels tried to stick to their principles but, in the face of Maidstone pressure, their passing lacked accuracy or they were forced to go long - the last thing they wanted.

Elokobi’s side couldn’t have approached the game any better and had a couple of early shots on goal, Brookes firing over from the edge of the box and Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong going close after driving into the box.

Aaron Blair had the ball in the net from a Charlie Seaman flick on the 10-minute mark but the whistle went for a foul.

United did, however, break the deadlock on the quarter-hour mark after Tom Leahy was taken out in the box by Joel Colbran.

Brookes stepped up and confidently sent Chris Haigh - preferred in goal to ex-Stones No.1 Lucas Covolan - the wrong way from the spot.

Haigh flung up an arm to deny Blair as the Stones striker attempted to lift the ball over him just inside the area.

He came to the rescue again with a decent save after Blair sent Seaman through one-on-one and, seconds later, George Fowler’s touch just let him down in the box.
