World Rugby to lower tackle height globally after RFU's controversial 'waist line' rule - report

Global rugby governing body, World Rugby, is looking at implementing a lower tackle height rule across the professional game, according to a report by The Telegraph.

This comes after the England Rugby Football Union's (RFU's) decision to lower the legal tackle height in amateur rugby, capping it at waist high, which drew plenty criticism on social media but also some support from people like Wallaby great David Campese, who called for its implementation at all levels of rugby. 

It seems like World Rugby have taken notice and will follow suit, despite the RFU's new tackle law only kicking in on 1 July across England and Wales.

World Rugby CEO Alan Gilpin told The Telegraph: "Yes, we’re looking to make sure that we are implementing a lower tackle height across all parts of the game. How that’s actually implemented is slightly different in the community game to the elite game.

"You’re in a slightly different environment, for a number of reasons, in the elite part of the game, particularly at an international level, because the level of – for example – medical provision, diagnostic ability etc, is very different."

Last week Thursday, the RFU released a statement saying that their council had approved the lowering of the tackle height across community rugby in England.

"To support player welfare, the RFU Council agreed on Monday 16th January to lower the height of the tackle across the community game from July 1 2023," the RFU statement said.
