Woodhead Pass closed after crash 'involving multiple vehicles' - latest updates

The cross-Pennine Woodhead Pass route between Manchester and Yorkshire has been closed after 'a collision involving multiple vehicles', National Highways has said.

Police were called to the incident on the A628 -  linking Greater Manchester, Derbyshire and South Yorkshire - at around 10.30am on Saturday.  National Highways has issued an alert to all motorists as a result, with advice to take the M60 or M62 instead.

Derbyshire Police are said to be on the scene, but no further details have been revealed as yet. It's not known how many vehicles are involved.

In a statement, National Highways said: "The A628 Woodhead Pass in Greater Manchester/Derbyshire is closed in both directions between the A57 (Hollingworth) and the A6024 (Woodhead) due to a collision involving multiple vehicles.

"Derbyshire Police are on scene. Road users are advised to use the M60 or M62 (or if travelling from the south of England consider using the M1) as an alternative route. If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.

"Further information is available from National Highways by visiting our www.trafficengland.com website and travel apps, or via our regional twitter feed. Our 24/7 contact centre team is also available to provide up to the minute information on 0300 123 5000."

It's understood the collision happened between Tintwistle and Crowden, with queuing traffic reported on Hyde Road and around Mottram Moor.
