Women’s Euro 2022 team guide: Historic favourites Germany keen to remind upstart rivals who is boss

The most successful team in Women’s European Championships history are seeking a ninth trophy as Germany travel to England this summer.

They will not have it easy, however, having been included in a tricky group alongside the likes of Spain and Denmark.

For a long time Germany were the continent’s dominant force, lifting the trophy in eight of their first nine European Championship appearances and also winning back-to-back World Cups in 2003 and 2007.

However, the playing field has levelled in recent years and they have failed to get beyond the quarter-finals in each of their past two major tournaments.

Voss-Tecklenburg won this tournament four times as a player during a glittering 125-cap German career before stepping into management.

The 54-year-old was in charge of Switzerland for six years and led the country to its first World Cup in 2015 before taking charge of the German national side in the run up to the 2019 tournament.

Germany boast a wealth of attacking talent and technical prowess in midfield but Schuller is their most potent threat.

The 24-year-old scored 16 times in 22 league outings for Bayern Munich this term to finish as the Frauen-Bundesliga’s top scorer and has been prolific for the national team, too.

As with most of the big guns, Germany cruised through qualification at the top of their group but results since the turn of the year have been worrying.

They took just one point from their Arnold Clark Cup matches against England, Spain and Canada and suffered a surprise defeat to Serbia in World Cup qualifying, having hammered the same side 5-1 in the reverse fixture.
