Woman rushed to hospital amid 'explosion' at house after 'gas cylinder catches fire'

Emergency services were called to a street in Clayton following an 'explosion' at a house after a 'gas cylinder caught fire', the Manchester Evening News understands.

Fire crews, police and paramedics raced to the scene of the incident on Himley Road, in Clayton, shortly before 5pm on Tuesday (March 5) to reports of a blaze at a house.

It is understood that a gas cylinder towards the rear of the property caught fire and caused an 'explosion'. The street was cordoned off as emergency services descended on the residential street.

A woman was assessed at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital by paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service. Further details on her condition are not yet known.

Emergency services remained at the scene for a number of hours on Tuesday with fire crews taking around two hours to eventually put out the flames.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Shortly before 16.50pm this afternoon (Tuesday, 5 March), five fire engines from Blackley, Philips Park, Manchester Central and Gorton fire stations were called to a house fire on Himley Road, Manchester.

“Crews arrived quickly and used one jet, two hose reels, four breathing apparatus and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire. One woman was assessed at the scene for smoke inhalation before being conveyed to hospital by North West Ambulance Service.

“Firefighters worked alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe before departing after approximately two hours in attendance.”
