Woman fighting for life after being pulled from water at Salford Quays

A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after being pulled from the Manchester Ship Canal this afternoon. Emergency services descended on the area shortly after midday after the alarm was raised.

A huge number of police, ambulance service, and fire service vehicles converged on an area of Salford Quays called Clippers Quay, just over the water from Old Trafford football ground.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said they were called to reports of a woman in the water and she was rescued. She was rushed to hospital where she remains in a critical condition they added.

A cordon was put in place with the footpath that runs along the side of the canal taped off with officers standing guard.

A man who works in the area just told me he saw emergency services come ‘whizzing past him’ a short distance away from here, sometime before 12:30pm. “There were loads of them” he said. “Police, ambulances, fire engines and incident response units. One after another.

“I had no idea what was going but I knew it was something bad. Eventually, I heard they were here so came down to have a look what had happened. We’ve had all sorts around here. There’s always something going on in Salford.”

A resident at a local apartment block said the scene appeared to move from further down the Quays to Clippers Quay. He said: “I saw all the police cars and ambulances going to the main bit of the quays. That was about quarter past 12.

“The whole mob then all turned round back onto Trafford Road and then came down here about half 12. There were incident response units which you only get for serious stuff.
