Woman failed eight rounds of IVF before discovering 29-year-old medical mistake

A woman failed eight rounds of IVF and was unable to have children before finding out her contraceptive coil was left inside her for almost 30 years.

Hayne Huddleston was told by a GP in 1990 that the contraceptive that was fitted a year earlier had fallen out. Because of this, she had another device fitted but had it taken out after she and her husband David, 61, decided to have children.

Despite this, the first device was unknowingly still there while Jayne suffered from heavy periods, bleeding, stomach pain, and infections. After Jayne, now 63, was unable to conceive, she and David underwent eight rounds of IVF between 1995 and 2002.

Jayne was unable to figure out the issue until she underwent scans for back pain that revealed the coil in 2019. She quickly underwent surgery under general anaesthetic to remove the device.

Jayne, from Wistaston in Cheshire, said: "After the coil, which I now know was the second one, was inserted in 1990 I started to suffer with symptoms. It wasn’t nice at all. I remember visiting my GP on several occasions and being told it was just hormonal.

“However, after the second device was removed we struggled to conceive. I remember the GP checked my hormone levels and I was told that they were normal. Me and David tried everything we could think of but nothing happened and we were referred to specialists who suggested IVF.

“Even after initial failed cycles the doctors didn’t seem too concerned. They said we had good quality embryos and I also had proven fertility. I remember at one stage David even asking the doctor whether they were sure a coil wasn’t still there?
