Wolves youngster tipped for international call-up as manager watches on

Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Connor Ronan has been tipped by St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin for a senior Republic of Ireland call-up.

The 23-year-old received 14 under-21s caps, all but two of which came while current national team coach Stephen Kenny was in charge of the youth team.

Kenny has clearly kept a keen eye on the Wolves midfielder after a move north of the border as well, as the Boys in Green head coach was in the stands at Easter Road to watch the Buddies down Hibernian on Saturday.

Ronan rocketed in the only goal of the game just after the hour mark to make it two strikes in the last Scottish Premiership three matches.

Those key contributions have certainly been acknowledged by the St Mirren boss, who sang the loanees praises after the match.

“Connor doesn’t score bad goals, and that’s another one – in front of the Irish manager as well, so please God, that will do enough to get him in the set-up," Goodwin said [via The42 ].

“I’ve been banging the drum long enough. I met Stephen Kenny there downstairs; I’m always talking up Connor in the press.

“He knows him well enough from the under-21s."

True to his word, Goodwin was also full of praise late last month when Ronan again scored the winner against Aberdeen "with a bit of magic".

The loanee also hit the headlines last year with a stunning strike against reigning league champions Rangers while Steven Gerrard was still in the dugout.

At the time, Ronan labelled it "top so far" in the youngster's growing list of goals to date in a fledgling career, and it was in other quarters earmarked as a potential goal of the season contender.

Last year the midfielder spent the season in the Swiss Super League at Grasshoppers.
