Wolves set to join Aston Villa in transfer battle for Rangers ace

Wolverhampton Wanderers have joined a growing list of Premier League clubs interested in Rangers defender Calvin Bassey, according to reports.

Bassey, 22, has seen an increase in his stock in recent weeks following several impressive performances throughout the Scottish side's historic run in the Europa League, which saw Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men beaten on penalties in the final by Eintracht Frankfurt. Although capable of playing as a centre back or a left back, Bassey excelled in the centre of defence in the final. Where he recorded four clearances, two blocks, three interceptions, two tackles and seven duels won.

The Daily Record have stated that Wolves have joined Premier League rivals Fulham, Aston Villa and Brentford in the hunt for the defender who are all "keen" to acquire his services this summer.

Speaking ahead of the summer transfer window, Wolves boss Bruno Lage outlined how keen he will be to bring players in once the window opens. He said: “Maybe we need two or three players to increase the quality and the number of players in the squad.

"We cannot let what happened two years ago when it’s hard to replace a player like Raul (Jimenez). Nuno suffered the same thing two years ago."
