Wolves respond to Birmingham City interest in Matija Sarkic transfer

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ goalkeeping chief Tony Roberts believes another loan move would be beneficial for Matija Sarkic.

Sarkic spent the first half of the season on loan at Birmingham City and kept 10 clean sheets in 23 Championship matches before dislocating his shoulder and returning to Wolves in January. understands Blues have registered their interest in re-signing Sarkic, who has one year remaining on his contract at Wolves.

Sarkic has other potential suitors too, but there could be a vacancy in Wolves’ first team to become Jose Sa’s understudy if John Ruddy leaves the club in June. Ruddy’s deal expires imminently and he could quit Wolves in pursuit of football elsewhere.

But Roberts doesn’t want Sarkic, 24, sitting on Wolves’ bench at this stage in his career. The goalkeeping coach has offered hope to Blues and other Championship outfits by suggesting another loan move might be best for Sarkic’s development.

“We’ll see what happens now at the end of the season and see what his development plan is going to be, whether he stays here or goes out on loan again,” said Roberts. “With his quality, I wouldn’t want him sitting here being number three or number two, he’s a good enough goalkeeper to go and play in the Championship. He’s a full international. For his progression, he needs to play and get tested every week.”

Roberts was filling in for Bruno Lage at his weekly press conference after the Wolves head coach tested positive for Covid-19. Lage will miss Saturday’s clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge - but Sarkic won’t.
