Wolves learn major VAR change after Bruno Lage fury at Leeds United decision

The Premier League plans to release audio recordings of conversations between the referee and VAR to supporters.

A date for the change hasn't been revealed, but Premier League chief executive Richard Masters says it has the support of member clubs. Wolverhampton Wanderers their Premier League rivals haven’t been totally satisfied with the use of VAR since it was introduced in 2019.

The Premier League was the last of Europe’s top five leagues to introduce the technology and there have been numerous teething issues. Several decisions when against Wolves last season, particularly one against Leeds United in March, which really irked head coach Bruno Lage.

Wolves were two-nil up against Leeds when Raul Jimenez was controversially given a second yellow card by referee Kevin Friend. The decision wasn't overturned by VAR and Wolves ended up losing the game 3-2.

Friend's conversations with VAR that night couldn't be heard by supporters, so no official explanation was ever given to Wolves. That is now about to change with supporters set to hear audio of those discussions between the referee and VAR after the match has finished.

Masters said: said: “There is a general view that [releasing the audio] is a good thing. There is a desire to be more open with fans about referees’ decision-making and how we do that precisely we need to work out.”
