Wolves have 'reluctantly cancelled' pre-season tour as friendly fixtures called off

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly called off their planned pre-season trip to the United States. Bruno Lage was set to take his squad to compete in the "Ohio Cup" but, last week, that tournament was abruptly scrapped.

Newcastle were also set to join Wolves out in Ohio, as were two unnamed Spanish clubs thought to be Villarreal and Valencia. It has now come to light, via John Percy of The Telegraph, that Wolves have "reluctantly cancelled" their trip across the Atlantic in July due to “concerns over financial viability”. That means planned friendly fixtures against San Jose Earthquakes and Louisville City will no longer take place.

Head coach Lage will, though, apparently take his team across into Europe for a warm-weather training camp instead ahead of the new season starting on August 6. Last summer, Wolves began their pre-season against Forest Green Rovers and Crewe Alexandra before jetting out to Spain to take on Real Betis, Las Palmas and Saudi Arabian side Al Shabab. Friendlies then followed up at Stoke, in Coventry and, lastly, against Celta Vigo at Molineux prior to the opening day of the season against Leicester.

On Sunday, Portuguese winger Pedro Neto sustained an injury in the 3-1 defeat at Anfield but has since offered an update to Wolves supporters. "First off all just to say that everything is fine," he said. "After a long time, what a feeling. Now rest and next season come back with everything to conquer amazing things with this club and these amazing fans."
