Wolves: Fears £35.6m star could 'lose confidence completely'

Wolves will be hoping that Fabio Silva doesn’t lose his confidence at such a key stage in the season, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Silva made the switch to Molineux in 2020 but has struggled to justify the £36.5m price tag that Wolves paid Porto.

It’s been an incredibly frustrating 18 months for the young striker since he moved to the Premier League for a club record fee, and his fortunes don’t appear to be changing any time soon.

Having scored just four times in 32 top-flight appearances last season, Silva has failed to find the back of the net in 15 outings this time around and has been almost completely overlooked by Bruno Lage at times.

With Raul Jimenez Wolves’ standout first choice striker, the Portuguese has been restricted to just two league starts. As a result, Silva hasn’t been on the scoresheet since netting against West Brom in May.

He did start the defeat to West Ham last month when Jimenez was on the bench, but he wouldn’t keep his place against Crystal Palace last weekend despite the Mexican also being overlooked, with Daniel Podence tasked with an unfamiliar false nine role.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Ultimately, he’s a really good player, you’ve just got to hope that he doesn’t lose his confidence completely in a time like this.”

It feels almost harsh to be discussing Silva’s future so soon after he arrived, but his situation simply isn’t improving, which could mean that him leaving might already become an option.

He’s not going to dislodge Jimenez from his position any time soon, while Lage clearly doesn’t even trust him enough to use him off the bench on a regular basis.
