Wolves could sign their own Luis Suarez in bargain swoop for “wonderful” £25k-p/w star - opinion

Wolves have been linked with signing Bordeaux striker Hwang Ui-Jo recently and the South Korean could prove to be Bruno Lage’s own version of Luis Suarez at Molineux should he sign.

Reports last week suggested that the Old Gold had made an enquiry for the frontman, who is keen to make the switch to the Premier League.

He is available for a cut-price after the financial sanctions imposed on Bordeaux, although Wolves’ reported £2.5m bid wasn’t enough to tempt the French club into selling.

Lage is still incredibly low on striking options in his squad, as Raul Jimenez is still sidelined through injury, while Fabio Silva was allowed to join Anderlecht on loan, so signing a forward should be a priority for the club before the transfer window shuts.

Last weekend emphasised the need for a natural frontman, as Wolves lost 2-1 against Leeds despite having plenty of chances, with Lage deploying Hwang Hee-Chan up front when the South Korean has looked arguably more dangerous when playing on the wing.

Ui-Jo enjoyed an impressive 2021/22 season despite Bordeaux’s relegation, as he hit 11 goals in 32 Ligue 1 appearances, which was nearly double the most of any Wolves player last season, which again emphasises the need for attacking reinforcements.

Former Bordeaux coach Jean-Louis Gasset was full of praise for the South Korean in 2021, saying:

“I’m happy for Hwang and his two goals, he never hesitates to drift wide. He’s a brave player, finding his feet.

“He is great on the counter and a wonderful player to coach.”

If the £25k per week striker were to arrive at Molineux, he could perform a similar role to legendary striker Luis Suarez, as the Uruguayan forward is listed as the fifth-most similar player to Ui-Jo according to FbRef.
