WNBA playoffs 2022 - Complete schedule, results, news and highlights
The 2022 WNBA playoffs have arrived. And one spot in the semifinals is spoken for. The top-ranked Las Vegas Aces hit a WNBA-record 23 3-pointers Saturday to complete a sweep of the Phoenix Mercury and become the first team to advance out of the first round.
The defending champion Chicago Sky are the No. 2 seed. The Sky's title defense got off to a rocky start as the Liberty stole Game 1 98-91. But Chicago evened the series Saturday with a 38-point win — the largest margin of victory in WNBA playoff history — to force the series to Brooklyn for a decisive Game 3 on Tuesday (9 p.m. ET, ESPN).
The third-seeded Connecticut Sun and No. 4 Seattle Storm both held court Thursday to take 1-0 leads in their series.
Eight teams advanced to the first round, which for the first time since 2015 comprises four best-of-three series to determine the semifinalists. For the past six seasons, the top two seeds automatically received byes into the semifinals and single-elimination games determined the first two rounds. In the new 2-1 format, the higher seed hosts the first two games of the opening round.
The semifinals, scheduled to open Aug. 28, and WNBA Finals both remain best-of-five series. Both rounds follow a 2-2-1 format, wherein the higher seed hosts Games 1, 2 and 5 and the lower-seeded team will host Games 3 and 4.
