Wishaw boss delighted with league finish, but wanted to end on a win

Wishaw boss David Dunn was disappointed his side couldn’t end their league campaign with a win but admits he’s delighted with their fifth place finish in West of Scotland Conference C.

The Beltane Park side had to settle for a 1-1 draw away to 10-man Yoker on Saturday as Neil Reynolds’ second half effort cancelled out a first half opener for the hosts.

It was a fourth consecutive draw for Dunn’s men and kept up a fine run of results since he took over as boss from Mark Daly in December.

Wishy have lost just once in 10 games under Dunn and assessing Saturday’s display, he said: “On another day we probably would have been comfortable victors, but a point does us and makes sure we finish fifth, which we are really pleased with considering where we were when I came in [ninth].

“If we’d won the game I don’t think anyone would have complained.

“A couple of slack periods in the first half cost us. We lost a silly goal against the run of play after having some really good chances and hitting the bar.

“Coming in at half-time 1-0 down there wasn’t much in it and there was no fear from me that we wouldn’t get back into the game.

“We came out and started the second half really well, and got our goal.

“But the turning point was them getting a man sent off because 11 v 11 there was only going to be one winner at that point.

“Them going down to 10 saw them automatically sit in and it was difficult for us to break them down.”

Petershill, a side who netted a last-gasp equaliser against Wishaw last week, were crowned champions ahead of Drumchapel by a single goal in a tightly-contested Conference.

And Dunn is proud of how his side have fared in the division he believes to be the most competitive in tier seven.
