Wilson so cool, Trippier dangerous: Burnley vs Newcastle United half-time ratings

Newcastle held the lead at Turf Moor at the break, with Callum Wilson's penalty the difference between the two sides. The Magpies were hit by an early blow when Brazilian midfielder Joelinton was forced off with an ankle injury after a collision.

But that didn't put the visitors off their stride, and they took the lead when Matt Lowton handled in the box and, after a VAR check, the referee pointed to the spot. Callum Wilson made no mistake from 12 yards to put United into the lead.

The home side needed to respond, but Newcastle controlled the first half for long periods, although Dwight McNeil flashed a left-footed shot just over the bar.

Allan Saint-Maxinin could have made it 2-0 just before the break after outpacing Josh Brownhill, only to see Nick Pope pull off an excellent save.

You can follow the second-half action in our live blog here. Here's how Lee Ryder has rated the Newcastle players so far.

Yet to be fully tested but organising defence well enough.

Sharp in the tackle and giving Newcastle a great overlapping outlet and has put in a host of crosses.

A decent display so far.

Winning it all in the air.

A comfortable display down the left.

Some good passing work.

Slick and efficient in the middle. Has drawn a few fouls as well.

Injury blow after just eight minutes.

Yet to really make an impact.

Presented with great chance to double the lead.

Full of running and so cool with the penalty to notch his seventh of the season.

For Joelinton, 9: Not much impact.
