Willie Miller on nightmare Aberdeen scenario for Barry Robson as next boss 'audition' put under microscope by legend

Willie Miller reckons if Aberdeen decide to give Barry Robson the manager’s job then they must go all in.

The interim manager has more than steadied the ship and has now got the Dons back in the fight for third, after the convincing weekend win over Hearts. Robson has now guided the Pittodrie side to three consecutive victories and he has had growing backing from the dressing room and the stands in recent weeks. The Aberdeen board are this week continuing to interview candidates and Robson will be among the names they speak to.

Former captain, manager and director of football Miller feels it would be wrong for his club to ask Robson to take the job until the summer then see what happens. He knows if Robson gambles and it goes wrong then he could find himself out on his ear, as has happened to Stevie Hammell and Liam Fox at Motherwell and Dundee United, respectively. That is why he thinks if they genuinely believe Robson is the man then it must be for the long term. Miller, who was speaking at the launch of the 40th anniversary of the club’s European Cup Winners’ Cup celebrations, said: “That scenario you’re putting out there is tough for Barry.

“If he takes that until the end of the season and they decide he’s not the man for it, the new manager who comes in – where is Barry’s position? How many times have you seen coaches being thrust into the manager’s job?

“You just have to look at Dundee United; thrust into it and they take it on in good faith and good will. Then the new manager comes in and all of a sudden they’re out the door.

“I don’t think that’s right for Barry. Now, I think they know the man. It’s not as if they are appointing someone they don’t know. He’s been here for over a decade. If they are going to give
