Willie Miller fears ultimate Aberdeen FC vs Dundee Utd showdown as playoff scenario has legend fearing the worst

Willie Miller admits he’ll be watching Aberdeen’s next 90 minutes through the cracks in his fingers as he fears play-off panic at Pittodrie.

The most successful captain in the club’s history knows just how important tomorrow’s clash with Ross County is. Even more so when he contemplates a battle for top-flight survival against their old rivals Dundee United. The Dons are ninth in the table, two points ahead of St Johnstone and three in front of visiting County. A slip against the Highlanders could cost the managerless Reds dearly – and set them on course for a play-off fight against the Terrors, whose Championship title pursuit is proving a ding-dong battle.

County have been revived since Don Cowie replaced Derek Adams in the dugout at Dingwall, harvesting eight points from their last five fixtures while Aberdeen have taken just three. European Cup Winners’ Cup hero Miller said: “We can’t just say that we won’t be involved in the play-offs because that could happen. Even a draw for County this weekend would keep them hanging on in there but a win would be an outstanding result for them. And don’t forget that St Johnstone are only two points behind Aberdeen as well.

“The weird thing is that Dundee United aren’t guaranteed to win the Championship and claim automatic promotion, so it’s possible that Aberdeen could end up taking them on in the play-off final, which would be horrible for both clubs – and I don’t believe Aberdeen will have a plan in place for that situation. It’s imperative that doesn’t happen but the only way to prevent it is for Aberdeen to start winning games again.
