Wigan Athletic poised to make transfer move for Leeds United player

League One promotion hopefuls Wigan Athletic are set to offer a contract to Leeds United youngster Owen Bray, according to Football Insider.

The Latics are on the cusp of sealing a return to the second tier after being relegated in 2020 following going into administration, but despite that not being confirmed yet they are already on the look out for new players for next season.

And they’ve honed in on Bray, who featured for the club’s under-23’s this past week and is refusing to sign an extended contract at Elland Road.

Leeds have informed Bray that he is free to depart the Yorkshire club after not coming to terms on a new contract, and now Leam Richardson’s side look poised to swoop.

A 19-year-old Irish midfielder, Bray’s scholarship at Leeds was extended for another season last summer but he has failed to make a single appearance for the club’s under-23’s in the Premier League 2 competition this season, which has paved the way for his desire to exit the club.

The Verdict

Wigan have a youth system that do produce some talented teens, with Thelo Aasgaard the latest to come through and make an impact in the senior setup.

But then there’s the likes of Sean McGurk and Joe Gelhardt who have come through and ended up at bigger clubs – the pair are both at Leeds and in the latter’s case he is making appearances in the Premier League.

Therefore, the DW Stadium could be a great place for Bray to land as he’d get regular football for the under-23’s and there’s a clear pathway to the first-team as well.

The fact he’s played for the development squad already looks to be a sign that things are moving in the right direction and Bray looks set to continue his career with the Latics.
