Why Wimbledon players don't have to curtsey to Royals

Wimbledon is well underway and another competitive day awaits both players and fans alike.

It’s common for the Royals to be in attendance for the most anticipated games. The Royal Box has hosted a huge number of British royals over the years including The Queen, Prince William, the Duchess of Cambridge Kate and Meghan Markle.

Yesterday’s (June 28) event saw three matches take place at the centre court. The shortest game was the women’s singles completed by Emma Raducanu and Alice Van Uytvanck, which Raducanu won in two rounds.

Novak Djokovic also won the gentlemen’s singles against Soonwoo Kwon. The most anticipated and the longest game at centre court was Andy Murray against James Duckworth, which Murray won. Today’s centre court will see Iga Swiatek and Jana Fett, Francisco Cerundolo and Rafael Nadal and finally a big game between Serena Williams and Harmony Tan.

Prince Michael of Kent was spotted at the Royal Box yesterday. Also sat in the Royal Box was the Ukraine Ambassador to the UK Vadym Prystaiko along with his wife Inna. You might have noticed that at Wimbledon, players don't have to curtsey to Royals, here's the reason why.

In 2003 , HRH The Duke of Kent, also known as the Club’s President agreed that it was time to discontinue the tradition of players curtseying to members of the Royal family on entering or leaving the centre court. The only exceptions are Her Majesty and The Prince of Wales.
