Why Thomas Tuchel won't be in the Bayern Munich dugout vs Manchester United

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel will serve a one-game touchline ban when his side welcome Manchester United to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

United kick off their 2023/2024 Champions League campaign with a huge game in Germany, travelling to the top-seeded side in Group A and one of the favourites for the tournament. Bayern have enjoyed a strong start to their domestic season, picking up 10 points from four Bundesliga games.

They will fancy themselves to go the distance in Europe, not least due to the fact that they have Tuchel in charge. The German has been involved in two finals as a manager and beat Manchester City 1-0 in 2021 to claim the iconic trophy while at Chelsea.

But he will not be on hand to bark out orders from the touchline on Wednesday due to a touchline ban. He was sent off during Bayern's final Champions League match of last season, a 1-1 draw against City in April, after laying into the referee following a coming together by Kingsley Coman and Aymeric Laporte.

That ban has carried through the summer and into Bayern's next Champions League clash, which comes at home to United. Tuchel will therefore watch on from the stands in Bavaria although he will be allowed into his side's changing room and can communicate with his staff.

United head to Germany off the back of another disappointing defeat in the Premier League. Erik ten Hag's side were beaten 3-1 at home Brighton on Saturday, their third loss in four games.

The Dutchman has overseen a woeful away record against top-class sides domestically, with a trip to Bayern offering little solace.
