Why Sergio Perez was only punished for one safety car infringement and not two

Sergio Perez held onto his win at the Singapore Grand Prix after race stewards handed him a five-second penalty for two safety car infringements. Nearing the race's end, the Mexican's Red Bull race engineer informed him of the impending visit to the stewards after the race, requesting him to push to the end.

Perez, who Ferrari's Charles Leclerc had hounded, began pulling a gap over his rival, ultimately crossing the finish line 7.5 seconds clear of the Ferrari.

Perez duly performed his ceremonial and post-race duties, and met with the stewards soon after to defend his actions. A verdict was reached shortly afterwards, with the driver coming away with a reprimand and a five-second penalty.

The report

An official report by the race stewards read: "Article 55.10 of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations requires that the leader must keep within 10 car lengths of the Safety Car once deployed until the lights are extinguished.

"Car 11 [Perez] was the lead car on Lap 36 during the second Safety Car period in the race [brought out when Yuki Tsunoda hit the wall]. It was admitted that while the lights of the Safety Car were still on, PER failed to keep within 10 car lengths of the Safety Car between Turn 13 and Turn 14.
