Why Roy Keane won't be playing in Man United Legends match vs Celtic at Old Trafford

Manchester United icon Roy Keane has already explained why he does not compete in charity matches these days despite two of his old teams facing off at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

Keane made a whopping 475 appearances for the Reds during his illustrious playing career before making the switch to Celtic where he retired after just 11 matches for the Glasgow club. Due to his legendary status in football, it would be expected that the 53-year-old would be one of the first players asked to play in the Manchester United Foundation match this weekend.

However, the ex-midfielder will not be playing after admitting a couple of years ago that his fitness levels are not at the required standard to return to the pitch. In an interview with Off the Ball, he explained: "I'm not fit. I'm far from fit.

"My fitness levels are actually very, very embarrassing. Just because I've not put on loads of weight doesn't mean to say I'm fit.

"I wouldn't really be able to do any running. Put it this way, I've been invited a number of times over the last few years to play legends games or whatever you want to call it.

"I'd find it really difficult because I wouldn't be able to get around. Too many injury problems.

"I try to have a decent diet obviously and I'm wary of putting on too much weight, but I certainly wouldn't be fit enough to go on any sort of run." Just a month after this interview, Keane made a surprise appearance for United in a charity match against Liverpool at Anfield where he was given the full pantomime reception from the home crowds.
