Why referee will wear a camera during Crystal Palace vs Manchester United clash

The Premier League has announced that referee Jarred Gillett will wear a 'RefCam' during tonight's clash between Crystal Palace and Manchester United at Selhurst Park.

In a Premier League first, the league has said Gillett will wear a camera as part of filming for a one-off short programme promoting match officials. Footage from Gillett's camera will not be broadcast live but fans will be able to see it at a later date.

The footage captured will be used as part of a programme being produced by Premier League Productions. The aim is for it to offer further insight into the demands of refereeing in the Premier League.

The statement issued by the Premier League added that "the technology being used comprises a head-mounted device which is integrated into the usual communications system" used by match officials. The decision for such filming to take place has been approved by United, Palace, The International Football Association Board [IFAB], Professional Game Match Officials Limited [PGMOL] and the Premier League. The Premier League has also placed on record its appreciation to both Palace and United for their support with the project.

Gillett has taken charge of 19 Premier League matches so far this season, brandishing 84 yellow cards and two reds. He has taken charge of three United fixtures this term, including their 4-3 defeat at Chelsea last month.
