Why people travel hundreds of miles to eat at this curryhouse

The owners of an Indian restaurant which opened its second site less than a year ago are celebrating after two big wins at a recent awards ceremony.

Raman Kaur and Narinder Singh Athwa have run the Sai Surbhi restaurant in Preston for the last eight years, and decided to open a second restaurant in Urmston last December.

Last month, the pair, from Manchester, were named the recipients of two prizes at the Asian Restaurant Awards - with their Preston site being named the Best Indian Restaurant of the Year in the North West, and their Urmston venue receiving the Best Newcomer in the North West accolade.

In fact, the award they won for their Preston restaurant was something they won two years ago. The owners say it shows they are being consistent with their level of service and quality of food - with a menu including the likes of Tandoori grills, curries like Tikka Masala, Rogan Josh and Pathia, street food sides and platters.

“We’ve reclaimed it, which is great as it shows we’re doing something consistently right,” Raman tells the Manchester Evening News of their Asian Restaurant Awards wins. “We’re well-known in Preston, we have our regulars and we have been continuing to deliver year after year. It’s great to receive that recognition.”

The owners of Sai Surbhi, which means 'divine flavours', pride themselves on serving ‘real Indian food’ of a high quality. They say its the reason their original restaurant has stood the test of time and their Trafford venue is thriving after such a short space of time.
