‘Why MCGC Minna first open championship offered Motorcycles, food items to winners’

The first Minna Cantonment Golf Club (MCGC) Yearly Open Golf Championship offered different memories for the participants, but the overwhelming verdict was that it touched many lives positively.

The week-long Pro-Am event held from November 27 to December 3 with many winners in different categories going home with such mind-blowing prizes as motorcycles, refrigerators and other electronic items good enough as start-ups for businesses of individual winners’ interest.

Sirajo Usaini of Raino Golf Club, Jos, won the championship and the accompanying motorcycle star prize of the competition, which featured over 150 players from across the country.

Playing off handicap 10 in the Category-2 of handicap 6-12, Usaini in day one and two of the amateur event shot a gross 148 and (best) net of 128 to emerge the overall winner of the championship.

In the Category-3 men, handicap 13-20, Adamu Ogoh of TYB Golf Club, Abuja, playing off handicap 21, was the winner with 163 gross, 131 (best) net; the Category-4, handicap 21-28, had Joshua Omeiza of MCGC of Minna, handicap 24, as the winner with a score of 180 gross and 132 (best) net, all over two days.

In the Veterans’ category (Men), age was no barrier against the splendid performance of the senior citizens as Alhaji Abdulshaba Panti of MCGC Minna, playing off handicap 24, won with a score of 185 gross, 141(best) net over two days; the effort got the senior man a refrigerator.

In the Ladies category, Igho Ugbegu of Ibori Golf and Country Club (IGCC), Asaba, handicap 15, played a gross of 156 and the best score of 126 net over two days to win a giant refrigerator.

In the toughest of all the categories, the Category-1, handicap 0-5, Lucky Onjefu of Otukpo Golf Club, handicap 5, returned 142
