Why Marcus Rashford's Manchester United goal against Everton was disallowed

Marcus Rashford felt aggrieved at seeing a goal disallowed in Manchester United's win over Everton.

The England forward netted inside the final 10 minutes and on first glance it looked a legitimate strike. He beat James Tarkowski to the ball before and then skipped past Jordan Pickford and tapped into the empty net.

But replays showed the ball ricocheted up onto Rashford's arm in the build-up. After a VAR check it was chalked off. The incident did not affect Erik ten Hag's side too much as they held on for a 2-1 win at Goodison Park.

But offering an insight into why the goal was disallowed, former Premier League whistler Dermot Gallagher outlined the rule in full.

Appearing on Sky Sports , he said: "It does strike his hand, you can see it, he’s the only player involved, he scores and it doesn’t go to any other player.

"You could argue it still goes to the player but there’s no other player involved. That’s immaterial (if the player plays it off his hand) the only thing is does it strike his hand or arm? And it does."

Ironically, Bruno Fernandes was a just few yards away and had Rashford passed to him to tap into the empty net the goal would have stood. That is because players are allowed to pass to team-mates to score after accidentally handling the ball.
