Why Manuel Ugarte doesn't start for Manchester United vs Southampton

Erik ten Hag has named Manuel Ugarte on the bench against Southampton because he doesn't believe he is ready to start the game.

Ugarte signed for Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial €50million (£42.3m) on deadline day but he wasn't registered in time with the Premier League to face Liverpool.

The 23-year-old featured for Uruguay during the international break and played 90 minutes against Venezuela on Tuesday night, which meant he returned to Manchester on Thursday.

Despite returning to Carrington late and having just two training sessions under his belt, many fans suggested Ugarte should have been thrown into the starting line-up, but he's been named on the bench and Christian Eriksen has been selected to replace Casemiro in the side.

The only other change is Amad coming into the starting XI for Alejandro Garnacho, who liked a social media post about Cristiano Ronaldo's comments on Ten Hag earlier in the week.

Ten Hag was asked whether Ugarte could make an appearance from the bench and told MUTV: "I can't say, it depends on the game and how it is going.

"He's had two sessions and not even full sessions with the team. He doesn't know everyone and needs time to integrate. But of course, we hope to bring him in as soon as possible, but whether that is today, I don't know."

Ten Hag continued: "Amad is in a very good run, all during pre-season and all the games he played, so he's in a very good vibe, and Christian Eriksen has had a very good pre-season and is very good in training.
