Why Manchester United are not giving up on Frenkie de Jong and resisting Cristiano Ronaldo sale

Manchester United have a busy weekend in store as they finalise their preparations ahead of the Premier League season kicking off in a week's time.

United will face Atletico Madrid on Saturday and Rayo Vallecano on Sunday with two different teams expected to line-up in Oslo and Manchester ahead of the big kick-off. The Reds have enjoyed a positive pre-season tour with three victories and a draw in their four matches in Thailand and Australia.

However, off the pitch on-going sagas continue with Cristiano Ronaldo and Frenkie de Jong's futures. With that in mind our chief United writer Samuel Luckhurst has been answering your questions on the MEN website.

Q: Why don't they let Ronaldo go and also give up on De Jong? We only want players who want to play for us.

SL: United want to keep Ronaldo and there is little they can do about giving him away when there is not an obvious exit route, despite some GestiFute's best efforts to engage clubs. Chelsea won't be signing him, Bayern Munich aren't completely sold on the prospect and Atletico fans have made their feelings career.

On De Jong: I agree United should have walked away some time ago. From the outset, it was a deal fraught with issues: dealing with Barcelona, targeting a player attached to Barca, the economics of a move, the player never playing in the Premier League etc. But Ten Hag wants him and United have bought into his rationale for targeting De Jong. They're backing the manager, at least.

The scope for embarrassment is immense, of course. If United don't sign De Jong, it will be more embarrassing than the Fabregas ordeal.
