Why Man Utd star Rasmus Hojlund is struggling for goals in the Premier League

After failing to score at Anfield last night Rasmus Højlund still has zero goal contributions in his 13 Premier League appearances - including 10 starts - for Manchester United.

The 20-year-old striker, signed for £72 million from Atalanta in the summer, has only managed seven shots on target in 882 minutes of league football and has missed nine big chances.

But despite United finishing bottom of their group, below Bayern Munich, F.C. Copenhagen, and Galatasaray, he became the fastest-ever United player to score five goals in the Champions League. Højlund reached this tally in just four games, bettering Dwight Yorke’s record in the process.

The forward’s European form has bought him time with the Old Trafford faithful, but why is he unable to match his Champions League goal tally in the league?

A key factor behind Højlund's Premier League dry patch is a lack of service. United have few creative players who can consistently provide their number 11 with clear-cut chances. Besides Bruno Fernandes and an out-of-form Marcus Rashford, none of Ten Hag’s men have provided more than two assists this season.

Against Liverpool, Højlund started with Alejandro Garnacho and Antony on either side of him. The South American pair have only one assist between each other this season. Their limited service led Alan Shearer, on Match of the Day, to say: “Playing with Antony would do my nut in.”
