Why Europe is baking in Cerberus heatwave but it's wet in the UK

Following June’s sunny weather the UK has been plagued with wet weather in recent weeks as the Mediterranean experiences soaring temperatures. According to experts the hot weather has eluded us as we’re sat on the edge of a huge band of high pressure.

Countries such as Spain, Italy, Greece and Croatia have seen blistering conditions as Europe bakes in the Cerberus heatwave. Temperatures are projected to reach as high as 45C and aren’t expected to drop below the mid 20s at night, the Mirror reports.

The predicted figures aren’t too far off the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth, which was 56.7C in California's Death Valley in 1913. Various red alerts have been issued by weather organisations and comes after news earlier this month that the three hottest days on the planet were all recorded within the space of a week.

But the UK has not been impacted by the heatwave and forecasters at the Met Office say it’s not expected to get any warmer until the end of the month. Rebekah Sherwin, Expert Meteorologist from the Met Office’s global forecasting team, said: “Heatwave conditions already occurring across much of southern Europe, northwest Africa and the Middle East are expected to continue through the coming week.

“Peak temperatures – which are around 10 to 15°C higher than average - could reach the mid-40s degrees Celsius in parts of southern Europe and up to 50°C in parts of North Africa. Higher than average temperatures are also likely at times further north across Europe, but these will be shorter lived and less impactful.
