Why Dion Charles didn't start for Bolton Wanderers vs Sheffield Wednesday & Aston Villa potential

Ian Evatt says it was too soon to start striker Dion Charles for Bolton Wanderers upon his injury return against Sheffield Wednesday but will see about doing so against Aston Villa.

The Whites went close to taking the lead in a tight opening half an hour which they edged against the Owls. Liverpool loanee Conor Bradley put wide from a glorious one-on-one opportunity.

And not long after that, the Owls took the lead when the visitors capitalised following a big error which nearly resulted in an own goal for Bolton skipper Ricardo Santos. George Byers slotted home following that as Wanderers failed to react quickly enough.

The Owls scored a quick second not long after as Liam Palmer put them two up heading into half-time. Jack Iredale forced David Stockdale into action in the second half in perhaps the closest Wanderers came to pulling one back as they slipped to a 2-0 loss.

Wanderers are next in action this Tuesday when Premier League side Aston Villa visit the University of Bolton Stadium. The game is in the Carabao Cup second round and poised to be in front of a big crowd.

Charles did not start against the Owls having only completed a few training sessions following a return from a slight thigh injury, but Wanderers will look at him doing so against Steven Gerrard's side. Evatt reflected on the passage of play which gave the visitors the advantage and felt the Owls punished his side when they were rocked.

He said: “It was a bit too soon (to start Charles), he’s only had two training days, but it’s great to have him back and we’ll see about him for Tuesday.
