Who is Tom Hartley? England Test superstar plays for Lancashire and loves Everton

England won a remarkable first Test match in India to go 1-0 up in a five-match series this winter in thanks to a tremendous comeback lead by Tom Hartley. The 24-year-old, making his Test debut, was born in Ormskirk, Lancashire, and recorded the fourth-best test figures for any player in history on their first appearance in India, taking 7-62.

Hartley's selection for England in the touring squad came as a surprise, let alone playing in the first match, given his lack of red ball experience. The Lancashire bowler had only played 20 County Championship matches in his career before being picked but has previously been used by England in One-Day International matches.

In a shocking start to life as a Test bowler, Hartley was hit for a six off his first-ever ball when Yashasvi Jaiswal dispatched him over the rope on day one. Hartley was punished with another maximum from Jaiswal later in his first over and went for 131 runs in his first innings from only 25 overs.

Hartley did take two wickets for England but both came via batting errors from India as they took a first innings lead of 190 over Ben Stokes' side. Hartley did impress with the bat getting an impressive 23 to support his captain, nailing two fours and a six in his brief stay.

The left-arm off-spinner also provided valuable runs for England on the morning of Day four, striking a crucial 34 while batting with Ollie Pope - on his way to a sensational and ultimately match-winning 196. Hartley hit another four boundaries during that innings. It was his work with the ball that got the job done, though.

Taken off new ball duty after his first innings struggles, Hartley removed each of the Indian top four - including two quick-fire wickets caught by Pope at short-leg.
